Interview: Shirley Cason – Recording Artist & Composer

1. Your music evokes such peace and emotion—what inspires your compositions?

Thank you. My inspiration often comes from deeply personal moments—joyful or bittersweet. I believe music is how my heart speaks when words fall short. Whether it's a memory, a friend who's passed, or a sunrise that made me pause, these experiences guide my hands on the piano.

2. Can you describe your creative process when writing a new piece?

It usually starts with a feeling I can't shake. I'll sit at the piano, close my eyes, and let my hands wander. Sometimes a melody flows right away; other times, I layer textures with soft orchestral sounds until it feels emotionally true.

3. Do you approach your instrumental music as storytelling—even without lyrics?

Absolutely. Every track has a beginning, middle, and end—an emotional arc. Even when I don't use lyrics, I often write them privately as a guide to what the music is trying to say.

4. Your album has been in the Amazon Top 100 for over three years. How does that consistency feel as an independent artist?

Grateful and amazed. It's humbling to know that people continue listening and finding comfort in my music. As an independent artist, every stream, every download feels personal.

5. What does it mean to you to be a Grammy® Member?

It means being part of a larger creative family. It’s both an honor and a reminder that music connects us all beyond genres or borders.

6. You’ve arranged for other Grammy-winning artists—how do collaborations influence your solo work?

Collaborations push me to listen differently. Every artist brings a unique voice, and working with them helps me grow and approach my own music from fresh angles.

7. When did you first know music was going to be your path?

Probably when I was a child and realized I felt safest at the keyboards. It wasn’t just a hobby; it was a companion. Over time, I understood that music was my way of understanding the world.

8. How has your life shaped the emotions behind your music?

Every album is like a journal. Moments of grief, healing, hope—they all find their way into my work. I don’t shy away from sadness, but I always try to include light, too.

9. Your songs often balance light and shadow. Do you think artists have a responsibility to reflect real life in their art?

I do. Art isn’t just about escape; it’s about resonance. I want listeners to feel understood. Life is complex, and music can reflect that complexity beautifully.

10. Your listeners come from around the world—what kind of feedback touches you most deeply?

When someone says a piece helped them through grief or gave them peace during a hard time—that means everything. That’s why I keep creating.

11. Why do you think calming instrumental music is resonating more than ever?

We live in such a fast, noisy world. People are searching for quiet moments. Music that helps you slow down or reflect is more needed than ever.

12. You've given away music for charities and creative projects—why is that important to you?

Giving back is part of who I am. If my music can help someone else create or heal, then it's done its job. I believe in generosity through art.

13. How has YouTube and streaming changed how you share your music?

It’s opened doors to a global audience I never imagined. It’s also taught me how to be more visual with my storytelling. I love pairing music with peaceful imagery.

14. What role does your website play in connecting with your listeners?

My website is my home base—where I can offer free music, share updates, and connect on a more personal level. It’s where the heart of my music lives.

15. What’s next for you—another album, collaborations, or something totally unexpected?

All of the above! I’m working on a new series of ambient pieces, a few surprise collaborations, and dreaming up a visual album. The music never stops.

Love & peace,
