Written by Janis Ian and Russ Taff, A Thousand Years is a song of quiet depth and lasting warmth. Shirley created the keyboard arrangement for this recording, layering her instrumentation beneath Janis Ian’s original vocals and guitar with care and restraint, honoring the song’s emotional core and timeless character. After hearing the arrangement, Janis was so moved that she chose to release it as an official single on her own record label.
Janis Ian is a multiple Grammy®–winning songwriter.

I write songs inspired by the most personal moments in my life
—those that have moved me to tears or filled me with joy.
As Robert Frost once said, “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.” I truly believe that. If a song touches my heart while I’m creating it, I hope it touches yours when you hear it.
Life isn't always joyful—but it’s not always sorrowful either. I try to reflect that balance in every album, weaving moments of light and tenderness throughout. While I don’t sing on my albums—at least not yet!—many of my songs do begin with lyrics I’ve written from the heart.
Thank you for listening.
I hope my music becomes part of your own story.
❤️ Love & Peace, Shirley
